Assignment 6 – Companion Pieces

For this companion pieces project, I was not able to invest as much time as normal-due to my job being crazy busy for tax season and the amount of overtime i’ve had to put in! So I had to brainstorm for ways I could use play time with my daughter and make a photo story at the same time. I decided to incorporate outdoor time for this one and shot a series from our colored water prep, getting all the snow gear ready and heading outside to play. What better way to finish off outdoor cold (snow and rain at the same time) weather than pink hot chocolate and sprinkles!

I watched the assignment video on adding the gallery and followed along – however no matter I do I do not have the same settings as Angela on my wordpress site- I wonder if it is because I also have a different course site attached – no idea . I was not able to put text below my photos nor was I able to link them to the gallery, nor was I able to make them large sized – so I guess this has to do!

Assignment 5 – Elements of photography

For this assignment, I used a few different areas to choose my photos. I’ve been limited time wise to get out and about and the weather here has been fairly gloomy, surprisingly we have melting snow, but all the plant life is still brown and blah. One morning I caught the pink clouds coming up with sun and thought once edited that may make a great color contrast photo. For the texture, lines, and shapes photos I selected art decor around my home and took photos ( the lighting was a bit tricky this week so I had to really play with my settings). Lastly, we went to the park with my sister and niece so I decided to make use of the change of scenery. I chose a lady bug that pops on the black surface for color but the shadows were not avoidable that day. I tried to stage a depth scene with my “models” on the bridge but because of the constant dog walkers I wasn’t able to play around as long as I would have liked. I found the shape photo across from the park, but would like to edit to eliminate some of the ground to really accent the size difference from the tress and buildings. The trickiest was the form photo to find, but I think it worked out okay.

Assignment 4 – Light Room Edits

When I first started out with this assignment I tried to put together a cup of tea with other items in a scene, and it was just not working or looking right. Then I realized that we were to use food items (I suppose tea would count), and I switched over to apples and cinnamon. Once I figured out how to get close with the tripod and camera I was really able to play around with the various lighting during the day. I also had a foil tri-fold (thank you to Good-Food for sending in a box I tried and kept months ago!) that I used on either side and a white (parchment paper) cardboard. I wanted to try with a black one but haven’t gotten to the store to grab a black poster board yet. I played with moving those around, changing the blinds from pulled up, to slight light, slanted light etc. I took photos when the sun was bright and direct and photos when it was behind clouds but still bright outside. This assignment allowed me with one scene to really play with the ISO, F-stops, and Aperture, oh and exposure. It started to make more sense with using one scene on what makes brighter darker, angle of camera and position of lighting. This project was more fun for me once I started to feel like I was getting nice pictures. I discovered that I really like working in the AV mode that helps blur background. I tried my different lenses, but the longer one would not always take photos too close up so I settled with the 55mm one. My EXP Settings wouldn’t work with the RAW files, when I inserted into this post they would not allow me to edit to add it after. pic 1 – iso 100 f5.6, pic 2-iso 6400 f5, pic 3 – iso 100 f5.6, pic 4 – iso 1600 f5.6, pic 5- iso 200 f 5.6, pic 6- iso 3200 f5.6.

with my iphone i was able to attempt a few different shots, I find that the pictures on the iphone 7 turn out the best in direct sun! However, I prefer the Canon to the iphone for flexibility and ability to control the light, blur, angles.
